Origins
The Chuncho beans are found in its most authentic and pure form in the Urubamba Valley in Peru, near Quillabamba. This territory, where the Urusayhua mountain reaches its peak, is the Andes' Condor's habitat. Local mythology describes it as a sacred mountain. The famous Machu Picchu, a remarkable citadel built by the Incas, is also found in this region.
The beans
Well hidden and protected in the sacred valley of the Incas, the ancient and robust Chuncho beans' cacao trees are said to be more than 200 years old. This unique variety grows at 1200 meters of altitude, which is very rare for cacao, and makes it very hard to find and even produce. Cacao geneticists have recently discovered that the old Chuncho beans are one of the most aromatically rich in the world.
Chuncho's label of origin
Lots of chocolate in Peru is sold under the Chuncho label of origin, although most of it is a hybrid that has replaced the native cacao trees of the region.
